Keswick has more guest houses than any comparable town in the Lake District, and by a considerable margin — the great majority of visitors here stay in one rather than in a hotel. They are almost all small, family-run, and clustered in the streets a few minutes from the market square, with fell views from a good many of them. This guide covers the best regarded and what a base in the north actually gets you.

Keswick's accommodation has always leaned this way. It was a working town — graphite, then pencils — that became a walking centre, and walkers wanted a bed, a drying room and a large breakfast rather than a ballroom. The result is streets of solid Victorian and Edwardian houses run as small family businesses, and by most counts they take several times as many visitors as the town's hotels do.
The practical benefit is consistency: early breakfasts, boot storage, flasks filled, and hosts who actually know which paths are running with water this week.
Listed by position rather than ranking — all are independently run, and the character varies considerably more than the star ratings suggest.

One minute from the centre
Six en-suite doubles set back off the road, all with fell views, and private parking — one space per room, which in Keswick is worth a great deal. Flasks filled on request.
15 minutes' walk from the centre
A Victorian house in its own grounds with ten individually styled rooms, including one on the ground floor for guests with limited mobility. Quieter than the town-centre options.
4 minutes from Market Square
An award-winning guest house very close to the middle of the town, and a long-standing favourite.
Towards Castlerigg
Four-star with fell views, and family rooms sleeping up to five — one of the better options in the town for a family.
Central Keswick
Four-star in the middle of the town, about ten minutes from the Theatre by the Lake, with a garden and terrace.

Well placed for the town with an allocated parking space for every room.
Short flat walk from the centre
Four-star silver award, family and dog-friendly, and about five flat minutes from Derwentwater — useful if walking distance matters.
A mile east of town, Castlerigg Stone Circle stands in an open field ringed by mountains on every side — Blencathra, Skiddaw, Helvellyn, the Dodds. Around five thousand years old, free, open and unfenced. Everyone goes at lunchtime.
Staying in a Keswick guest house means you can go at first light instead, walk up in twenty minutes, and quite possibly have it to yourself. It is the single best argument for sleeping in this town rather than visiting it.
Ten minutes through Fitz Park brings you to the lake, where the launches work as a circular bus service round the shore. Ride to Hawes End for Catbells — the most climbed small fell in England, and deservedly — then sail back. It is the classic Keswick day and it needs no car at all.
Our scheduled tours depart Windermere station, Bowness Pier 1 and Ambleside library — all a fair drive south. From Keswick, a private day collected at your guest house is the practical answer, and it can run the northern fells or head south to the famous central lakes.
