All our tours can be booked directly online through the booking calendar on each tour page. Select your date, choose your departure point, enter your details and pay securely. You will receive an instant confirmation email. If you have any difficulty booking online or would prefer to book by phone or email, contact us directly and we will arrange it for you.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before your tour. Cancel more than 24 hours before your tour and you will receive a full refund with no deductions and no questions asked.

Cancellations within 24 hours of the tour are non-refundable, but we will always try to transfer your booking to another date where possible. If you need to change the date of your booking, contact us as early as possible and we will do our best to accommodate you.

This applies to all scheduled and private tours. Bespoke tours have separate terms, which we will confirm with you at the enquiry stage.

Yes — full payment is taken at the time of booking. This secures your place on the tour. Payment is processed securely through our booking system. We accept all major credit and debit cards.

Yes — you will receive an email confirmation immediately after booking. This will include your tour details, the pickup time and location, what to bring and how to contact us if anything changes. Please check your spam folder if you do not receive it within a few minutes.

We very rarely cancel tours. In the event that we need to cancel — due to a guide emergency or extreme weather conditions — we will contact you as far in advance as possible and offer either a full refund or a transfer to another date. We will never cancel without giving you both options.

Yes. Gift vouchers are available for any amount and are valid for twelve months from the date of purchase. They can be used against any tour. They are delivered digitally as a printable PDF. See our Gift Vouchers page for more information.

Maximum seven guests per tour. This is a firm limit — we never exceed it. Seven guests means the expert storyteller can talk to everyone individually, can answer questions at any point, and can change plans when something better presents itself. It is not a compromise. It is the whole point.

All our tours include: pickup and drop-off from your chosen departure point, expert guide throughout, comfortable licensed minibus transport, and all parking and vehicle costs.

Additional inclusions vary by tour. The Beatrix Potter tours include Hill Top entry. The Wordsworth tours include Dove Cottage entry. The Hill Top & Windermere Cruise afternoon tour includes the Windermere Lake Cruises boat ticket.

Food and drink are not included on any tour unless specifically stated. There is free time for lunch on the Brontë Country Day Trip and time for a café visit in Hawkshead on the Beatrix Potter morning tour.

Yes — and this is one of the most significant differences between our tours and a coach tour.We give a continuous running commentary throughout every journey. Coach guides must wait until the vehicle has stopped and parked before speaking.

We give a continuous running commentary throughout every journey. Our expert storytellers can legally talk, guide and answer questions while driving. The landscape is explained as you pass through it. The story never has to pause for traffic lights, junctions or narrow lanes. Every mile of the journey is part of the tour.

All our tours involve gentle walking — mostly on village lanes, garden paths and level ground. There is no fell walking or strenuous terrain on any of our standard tours. Comfortable shoes are fine for all tours. Hiking boots are not required but are welcome. If you have any mobility concerns, please contact us before booking and we will advise on the most suitable tour and any sections that may be challenging.

Food and drink are not included on our half-day tours. The Brontë Country Day Trip (full day) includes free time for lunch in Haworth, and tea and biscuits are provided on the return journey. The Wordsworth tours include tea and refreshments at the end. We recommend bringing a water bottle and a snack on any tour. Our expert storytellers can advise on café stops during the tour where time allows.

Yes — all our tours are suitable for children, and the Beatrix Potter tours are particularly popular with families. Our expert storytellers are experienced at pitching the storytelling to mixed groups — enough detail for adults, enough story and colour for children. The Brontë Day Trip is a full day with content pitched at an older audience, and tends to suit children aged 10 and above best. If you are booking with young children, please contact us and we will advise on the best tour for your group.

Please contact us before booking to discuss your specific requirements. All our tours involve some walking, but we are flexible about which sections guests participate in and can often arrange for guests with mobility limitations to remain in the vehicle at specific stops. Our minibus is comfortable and accessible at ground level. We want everyone to be able to enjoy our tours — please speak to us honestly about what you need and we will do our best to accommodate you.

It depends on the tour. On our scheduled tours, unfortunately not — our vehicles carry multiple guests, and not all guests are comfortable sharing a small minibus with a dog. On a private tour or bespoke tour, however, a well-behaved dog is welcome by prior arrangement — we carry a proper travel crate, which takes up nearly the whole boot, so please tell us when you enquire rather than on the day. We also visit sites including Hill Top and Dove Cottage where dogs are not admitted, so we will plan the route around that with you. Assistance dogs are always welcome, on any tour.

We run tours in almost all weathers. The Lake District in light rain or mist is atmospheric and beautiful — many guests prefer overcast days for photography and for the sense of the landscape as it really is. We only cancel or significantly modify a tour in genuinely extreme conditions (severe storm, dangerous road conditions). If we need to modify your tour due to weather, we will contact you the evening before. For the Brontë Day Trip, time at Haworth and the Parsonage grounds may be adjusted in very poor weather — we will always discuss this with the group on the day.

We pick up from three locations:

Windermere station — outside the ticket office at Windermere railway station. This is the most convenient pickup for guests arriving by train on the branch line from Oxenholme.

Bowness Pier 1 — outside the main pier at Bowness-on-Windermere. Convenient for guests staying in Bowness.

Ambleside library — outside the library on Kelsick Road in Ambleside. Convenient for guests staying in Ambleside or the upper Windermere valley.

We collect in this order: Windermere first, then Bowness, then Ambleside. Please be ready at your pickup point at the stated time.

Not at all. Our tours are specifically designed to work for visitors arriving without a car. All three pickup points are accessible by public transport — Windermere station is on the branch line from Oxenholme (West Coast Main Line), Bowness and Ambleside are served by the 599 bus from Windermere station. Guests arriving by train from London, Manchester, Edinburgh or anywhere else on the national rail network can join any of our tours directly from the station.

Our standard pickup points are Windermere station, Bowness Pier 1 and Ambleside library. If you are staying somewhere that makes these pickups impractical, please contact us and we will see what can be arranged. Alternative pickups may be possible depending on location and which tour you have booked. There may be a small additional charge for pickups significantly outside our standard route.

If you are arriving by train and your service is delayed, please contact us as soon as you know — our contact number is in your confirmation email. We will always try to wait a reasonable time for guests whose trains are running late. For guests on the morning tours departing at 9am, the 8:42am arrival from Oxenholme gives good timing. If you are cutting it close, let us know and we will keep an eye on the train times.

We drop off at the same pickup points in reverse order — Ambleside first, then Bowness Pier 1, then Windermere station. The exception is the Beatrix Potter Hill Top & Windermere Cruise afternoon tour, which ends with the Windermere Lake Cruises boat from Ambleside — guests are dropped at Bowness Pier 1 by the boat rather than by our vehicle.

Yes. Windermere has pay-and-display car parks near the station. Bowness has several car parks near the pier. Ambleside has car parks on Kelsick Road near the library. All are well-signed. However, if you are driving to the Lake District, we would encourage you to consider arriving by train instead — the parking problem in the Lakes in summer is significant and a train arrival makes the whole day much simpler.

The Lake District weather is variable in all seasons. We recommend:

Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes or trainers are fine for all our standard tours. The walking is on lanes, paths and garden ground — nothing requiring hiking boots, though boots are always welcome.

Layers: A base layer, a warm mid layer (fleece or jumper) and a waterproof jacket covers almost all conditions. Even in summer, a waterproof is sensible in the Lakes.

In winter: Warm coat, hat and gloves. The minibus is heated but the stops can be cold.

Your confirmation email is all you need to show on the day — on your phone is fine, no need to print. We recommend bringing a water bottle, a small snack if you tend to get hungry, and a camera or charged phone for photography. If you are coming on a Beatrix Potter tour and have copies of the books, bring them — reading from the originals in the places they describe is something our expert storytellers do and having the book in your hands makes a real difference.

Yes. All our tours include time in at least one village — Hawkshead, Grasmere, Haworth — where public facilities are available. For the half-day tours, there is typically one toilet stop opportunity. For the full-day Brontë tour, there are multiple opportunities including during the Haworth lunch stop. Please let your expert storyteller know at the start of the tour if you have specific requirements.

Our tours operate in comfortable, licensed minibuses with a maximum of seven passenger seats. All vehicles are heated, have good visibility from every seat, and are maintained to a high standard.We give a continuous running commentary throughout every journey.

Yes. Both Tim and Sandra hold specialist These go well beyond a standard driving licence, requiring dedicated training, medical assessment and ongoing renewal. All vehicles carry full public liability insurance. All guides are DBS checked.

Absolutely — photography is very much encouraged. Our expert storytellers know which viewpoints, angles and moments offer the best shots and will point them out as you go. Please be aware that Hill Top (National Trust) has photography restrictions inside the house — photography of the interior is not permitted. The garden and exterior are fine.

Food is not included on most of our tours, so dietary requirements are generally a matter for guests to manage during free time. For the Brontë Day Trip, where we provide tea and biscuits on the return journey, please let us know of any allergies or requirements when booking and we will ensure appropriate provisions.

Our expert storytellers are Tim, Sandra and Gillian. Tim is our founder and leads the Beatrix Potter and scenic tours. Sandra and Gillian work together on our literary tours — Gillian guides while Sandra drives, which means the commentary runs continuously without stopping. All our tours are conducted in English. Our expert storytellers speak clearly and at a measured pace, which is generally accessible for visitors whose first language is not English. If you have specific language requirements, please contact us before booking and we will advise honestly on whether we can accommodate you.

Not at all. Our expert storytellers provide all the context you need, whether you arrive knowing a lot about Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter or the Brontës, or knowing very little. Many of our most enthusiastic guests are people who came to a tour knowing very little about the subject and left wanting to know much more. No prior knowledge is assumed or required on any tour.

Very much so. A significant proportion of our guests are solo travellers — people who want to see the Lake District properly without having to navigate it alone. Our small groups (maximum seven) mean solo guests are never anonymous. The expert storyteller has time for everyone individually. Many solo guests tell us that the small group format is specifically what made the experience enjoyable.

Yes. Sandra and Gillian are both experienced professionals, and many of our guests travelling alone or in women-only groups specifically mention the reassurance of a female guide and driver. We think it is worth saying this clearly rather than leaving it to guests to infer. Our tours are welcoming, safe and specifically good for solo women travellers.

Yes. All our tours are available as private tours for groups of up to seven. A private tour means the vehicle and guide are exclusively yours — no other guests, no fixed itinerary you didn't choose, no compromises on pace or stops. Private tours start from £195 for a half day and £295 for a full day. Contact us to discuss your requirements and we will put together a bespoke proposal.

Yes — completely. Tell us your interests, the places you most want to see, the subjects you want to explore, and we will build the day around them. If you want to spend longer at Hill Top, or add a stop we don't normally include, or combine elements from different tours — all of this is possible on a private booking. This is the great advantage of private over group tours.

Excellent for them. We have run private tours for significant birthdays, anniversaries, family gatherings, hen parties and corporate groups. A private tour makes any occasion feel considered and personal. If you are planning something specific, tell us when you enquire and we will make sure the day works for it.
