Bespoke Tours · exclusive, extraordinary days

How you want it.
Where. And when.

A morning, an afternoon, an evening, a whole day — or several of them in sequence. Built for you from nothing, run for nobody else, and shaped by a conversation rather than a timetable.

Our approach

The luxury, we think, is in the knowing.

Not the vehicle. Not the trinkets. Certainly not gadgetry.

A bespoke day is quiet from the moment we collect you. There is no script and no clipboard. There is someone beside you who has spent their life reading this landscape, and who has thought carefully about your day long before you woke up.

They will have looked at the sky, the half-term traffic, which gate the National Trust has open and which garden is three days from its best. They will know the famous viewpoint is unbearable at eleven and sublime at four, and they will have arranged your day accordingly without ever mentioning that they did.

Effortlessness is expensive to produce. That is rather the point of it.

There is a good deal of talking on these days, and a fair amount of laughing. Questions are the whole point of them: nobody minds a daft one, everybody gets a straight answer, and the best conversations tend to start halfway up a pass and finish somewhere entirely different.

Four things we hold to

The details, done properly.

I
Curiosity, satisfied
Ask us anything. Why that wall goes all the way up there. Who lived in that farmhouse and what happened to them. Which of the poets was insufferable at dinner parties. You will get a proper answer, usually with a story attached and quite often with a laugh — and by the time we drop you off it feels less like a tour than a day out with a friend who knows the place inside out.
II
Timing as the true luxury
Anyone can visit Tarn Hows. Arriving as the coaches leave, when the light has softened and the water has gone still — that is craft. We build days around the hours, not the list.
III
Seven seats. Never eight.
Small numbers are not a limitation we tolerate; they are the reason the day works. Everyone hears everything. Nobody waits for anybody. And we stop where a coach simply cannot go.
IV
Nothing showy
Good coffee from a proper flask. Something local worth eating. A handful of photographs, taken quietly and sent on afterwards. Small courtesies, offered without ceremony — and no gimmickry anywhere.
The shape of it

However long you want it to be.

Most operators sell you a slot. We would rather ask how much of the day you actually want, and then fill exactly that.

A morning

Roughly 3½–4 hours

Out early, while the roads are quiet and the light is at its most generous. The best half of most days, and the one photographers ask for.

From £459 the group · terms confirmed at enquiry

An afternoon

Roughly 3½–4 hours

A gentler start, warmer colour, and the pleasant business of arriving somewhere just as everybody else is leaving it.

From £459 the group · terms confirmed at enquiry

An evening

Late spring to early autumn

The one almost nobody offers. Long light, empty passes, the fells going gold and then blue. Only possible when the evenings are long enough — which is exactly what makes it worth asking for.

From £459 the group · seasonal · terms confirmed at enquiry

A whole day

Roughly 7–8 hours

Collected in the morning, returned in the long light of the afternoon, with a lunch table already held in your name and no schedule but yours.

From £915 the group · terms confirmed at enquiry

Or several days

Two, three or five days planned as a sequence rather than as separate outings — which is a considerably better way to see a wide subject properly, and lets us reach places a single day cannot justify. Multi-day tours are quoted individually.

Included, quietly

Things we don't make a fuss about.

Collection arranged around you

Tell us where you are staying when you enquire. Once we know, we confirm where and when we collect you, and we bring you back afterwards.

Refreshment worth stopping for

Proper coffee and tea, and something local and good, produced at the moment you begin to want it rather than at a scheduled interval.

Photographs of your day

A handful, taken unobtrusively and sent on afterwards — so nobody spends the best hour of the day holding up a phone.

How it works

A conversation, then some proper thinking.

Tell us the idea, however half-formed. We will ask a few questions — dates, who is coming, how far anybody wants to walk, what you are really hoping for.

Then we go away and build it: the route, the timings, the opening days, the admissions, where lunch will actually be good. We tell you what we have arrived at and how we got there, before you commit to anything.

We do not publish bespoke itineraries. The knowledge is in the storyteller, not on the page.

That is not mystery for its own sake. A list of places is the least valuable part of a day like this — anyone can visit the same six locations and come home with a fraction of what you will. What you are booking is the thinking that put them in that order, and the person beside you who knows why it matters.

The planning fee

£95, and it comes back to you.

What it buys

The research. Somebody sits down with your idea and works out what is genuinely possible, rather than approximately possible.

Redeemable, not refundable

The full £95 comes off your tour when you book. If you decide not to go ahead it covers the thinking time — we say so plainly rather than in the small print.

Simple variations

If your idea turns out to be a light adjustment to a day we already run, we will say so and quote you the private tour instead — the same route, exclusively yours, with no planning fee.

Start with what you love

Four sparks — and everything between.

Wordsworth
The valleys and waters that made the poetry — with the lines read aloud where they were written.
Brontë Country
Moorland, Haworth and the parsonage. Wild, weather-beaten, and worth the crossing.
Herriot's Dales
Stone barns, market towns and the warm, particular world of All Creatures Great and Small.
Beatrix Potter
Hill Top, Hawkshead and the countryside she quietly saved for the rest of us.
In their words

What guests remember.

★★★★★
"Our guide explained the story of why Wordsworth planted them — and I completely lost my composure. I have taught English Literature for thirty years. I knew the poem. I did not know this."
Caroline M. · Google
★★★★★
"Gillian talked throughout the entire journey, reading from the poems in the exact places they were written. I have recommended this tour to everyone I know."

Bespoke tours at a glance

A bespoke tour is a private Lake District, Yorkshire Dales or Brontë Country tour designed from scratch around your interests, for one to seven guests. It can run as a morning, an afternoon, an evening, a full day, or several days in sequence — wherever you want to go and whenever suits you. Half days from £459 and full days from £915 per group; multi-day tours quoted individually. A £95 planning fee applies, redeemable in full against your tour when you book. Collection is confirmed once we know where you are staying; refreshments and photographs included.

Questions

Worth knowing.

Half days from £459 and full days from £915 per group, with most falling between those figures and £942 depending on distance and whether the day needs two of us. Multi-day tours are quoted individually. We always explain how we arrived at the figure, and terms are confirmed at enquiry.
From late spring to early autumn, yes — and it is one of the loveliest things we do. The passes empty, the light lasts for hours and the fells change colour twice. Outside those months there simply isn't the daylight, and we would rather say so than sell you a drive in the dark.
Because the day does not exist yet and somebody has to build it. The £95 protects that research time, and it comes straight off your tour when you book — so if you go ahead, it has cost you nothing.
We will tell you the shape of the day, what it includes and why — and the full detail once you have booked. We do not publish bespoke itineraries, because the day is the work.
Anything specific. "Something literary" is harder to build than "my mother read us The Tale of Mr Tod and we would like to stand where it happened". Tell us the real reason and the day gets better.
Two vehicles with two guides on the same day, provided you book well ahead — it takes proper planning and both diaries need to align. Tell us your numbers and we will tell you honestly what is possible.
Yes, by prior arrangement — a bespoke day is the easiest sort of day to build around a dog. We carry a proper travel crate, which takes up nearly the whole of the boot, so it must be agreed when we plan the day rather than sprung on us at the door: it limits luggage and rules out some indoor stops, since places such as Hill Top and Dove Cottage do not admit dogs. Tell us at the outset and we will shape the route so the dog is an easy part of the day rather than a complication. Assistance dogs are always welcome.
