The quiet residential street Applegarth Villa sits on.

Applegarth Villa sits on a quiet Windermere street, minutes from the station, and being adults-only it draws a particular kind of guest: couples who want their Lakes stay uncomplicated by anything but each other's company. This guide is written with exactly that in mind — a village on your doorstep, a lake close by, and days out that let a couple actually switch off together rather than manage a itinerary.

Quick Facts

The village, unhurried

Windermere village rewards a slow morning: independent shops along the high street, cafés without the queues of Bowness, and a gallery or two worth a browse. From Applegarth Villa it's a genuinely pleasant walk rather than a trek — the sort of place a couple can wander without an agenda and still feel they've done something with the morning.

Down to the water

The lake is a comfortable walk or a short taxi away, and Bowness Bay rewards the trip: cruises, a promenade, and — timed for early evening — some of the loveliest light on the water you'll find anywhere on Windermere. A sunset stroll along the bay after dinner is the sort of simple pleasure this stay is built for.

Bowness Bay, a short walk or taxi ride away.

The days worth sharing: your tour days

For a couple's stay, one really good day out often matters more than a packed itinerary. Scheduled tours depart from Windermere railway station, Bowness Pier 1 and Ambleside library, three minutes away; private days can usually collect you at the door.

The 10 Lakes Full-day Tour with Ullswater Cruise

The full-day spectacular: ten lakes, the high passes, and an Ullswater Steamers cruise found on no other tour — the day many couples choose to anchor their stay.

Prefer a private day?

For a couple's celebration — an anniversary, a proposal, a milestone birthday — a private day collects right from the hotel and runs entirely to your own plans, with no other guests to share the vehicle. Applegarth Villa itself doesn't take pets, so this option assumes a dog-free stay.

Not sure which route suits your plans, or want a day built entirely from scratch — a family reunion, a wedding anniversary, scattering ashes somewhere that mattered? Tell us what you have in mind and we'll design a day around it — see our guide to celebrating a special occasion for ideas, or get in touch directly.

Practicalities for a couple's stay

Without a car: effortless — station, village and tour departures are all a short walk, and taxis cover the lake easily.

If you drive to the villages: Windermere and Bowness parking fills by mid-morning in season; Broad Street, Braithwaite Fold and Glebe Road are the sensible choices.

Timing: book your tour day with the room — seven seats, and summer dates go two to three weeks out.

A note on pets: Applegarth Villa doesn't accommodate pets, so this guide assumes a dog-free stay; well-behaved dogs remain welcome on our private tours generally, for guests staying elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Applegarth Villa from Windermere station?

About three minutes on foot — one of the closest hotels in the village to the platform, which also makes it very close to our scheduled tour departures.

Is Applegarth Villa suitable for families?

No — Applegarth Villa is an adults-only hotel. It's a popular choice for couples, and our tours are likewise built around adults and older children rather than young families.

Do tours collect from Applegarth Villa?

Scheduled small-group tours depart from Windermere railway station, Bowness Pier 1 and Ambleside library, a very short walk away. On private tours we can usually collect you directly from the hotel.

Which tour suits a couple's stay at Applegarth Villa?

Many couples choose the 10 Lakes Full-day Tour for the complete sweep, or a private day for total flexibility — either pairs beautifully with an evening back at the hotel's restaurant.
