The Langdale Estate sits at Elterwater in the mouth of Great Langdale, and it has one of the more surprising back-stories in the Lakes: for most of the nineteenth century this was a gunpowder works. The millstones, the water-wheel and the odd cannon scattered through the grounds are not decoration — they are what's left of a serious industrial operation, now softened into 35 acres of woodland and waterways. Staying here puts you at the door of the finest valley in England.

It is worth knowing what you are walking through. From 1824 the Elterwater works produced blasting powder for the Lakeland quarries and mines, using the fast water of Great Langdale Beck to drive the mills. The buildings were deliberately spread out and screened by trees — which is precisely why the estate feels so unusually wooded and scattered today. That water-wheel by the restaurant did real work. It is a rare thing in the Lakes: an industrial landscape that has been allowed to go quietly green.
You are staying at the entrance to what many walkers would call the best valley in the national park. The Langdale Pikes — Harrison Stickle, Pike o' Stickle and the rest — rise directly ahead, and the valley road runs up past the Old Dungeon Ghyll to the head of the dale. Even without climbing anything, the drive or the bus up the valley and back is one of the great short outings in the Lakes. Elter Water itself is a twenty-minute stroll, and the path onward to Skelwith Force is flat and easy.
Worth flagging plainly, because it catches people out: the Langdale Estate does not allow pets of any kind. If you are travelling with a dog and haven't booked yet, several of the parks and cottages in our other area guides are genuinely dog-friendly — and well-behaved dogs are welcome on our private tours.
Langdale is glorious and slightly cut off, which is the point. When you want the wider national park — the ten lakes, the literary villages, the Yorkshire days — our tours do the driving. Scheduled departures leave Windermere railway station, Bowness Pier 1 and Ambleside library; private days can usually collect at the estate.

Car-free: the 516 Langdale Rambler links Ambleside and the valley seasonally, but service is limited — most guests drive in and then leave the car for tour days.
Parking in the valley: the National Trust car parks at Old Dungeon Ghyll and Stickle Ghyll fill very early in season. Before nine, or not at all.

No. The estate does not permit pets of any kind in its lodges or apartments. If you are travelling with a dog, one of the dog-friendly parks or cottages elsewhere in this guide will suit you better.
On private tours, usually yes. Our scheduled small-group departures leave from Windermere railway station, Bowness Pier 1 and Ambleside library, around twenty-five minutes away.
Self-catering guests have use of the leisure facilities including the pool and gym, with Brimstone Spa available to estate residents. Stove restaurant and Wainwrights' Inn are both on or beside the estate.
