The Crown sits in the middle of Pooley Bridge at the northern tip of Ullswater, and since a thorough redevelopment by Thwaites it has been the most comfortable bed in the village. Its real asset is out the back: a two-tier terrace above the River Eamont with the lake beyond, which on a summer evening is the best seat in Pooley Bridge and knows it.

The two-tier terrace at the back looks over the River Eamont as it leaves the lake, and it is worth planning an evening around. It is also a good spot from which to understand the village's recent history: the Eamont rose far enough in December 2015 to destroy the sixteenth-century bridge entirely and cut Pooley Bridge in two. The steel arch that replaced it opened in 2020, and it is a genuinely handsome piece of engineering that most people cross without a second look.
Look for the flood marks around the village. This is a working landscape that occasionally reminds people of it.
The Steamers run from the pier a few minutes away — sail the length of the lake to Glenridding, or go one way to Howtown and walk the shoreline path back, around seven miles and largely level. Wainwright rated it the most beautiful walk in Lakeland and he was not a man given to overstatement.
Aira Force is roughly ten minutes down the western shore: a sixty-five-foot fall through ancient woodland, and the ground where Dorothy Wordsworth recorded the daffodils her brother later made famous. Go before nine — the car park fills.
Lowther Castle, a short drive east and outside the national park, is a vast roofless Gothic shell with gardens being brought back after decades of neglect. Almost no Lakeland visitor goes. It is strange and rather wonderful.

From Pooley Bridge a private day collected at the door is the practical answer, and it can run the northern fells or head south to the famous central lakes.
