The Wordsworth Hotel sits in the middle of Grasmere with its own grounds, next to the churchyard where the poet is buried. It is about as central as a Grasmere base gets, which in a village this walkable is the whole point: Dove Cottage, the gingerbread shop and St Oswald's are all a few minutes from the door.

St Oswald's is immediately beside the hotel, and the Wordsworth family plot lies beneath the yews William himself planted. Go before nine, when the churchyard is empty and the light is long — it is one of the quietest, most affecting few minutes in the national park, and by mid-morning there is a queue at the gingerbread shop three yards away.
The gingerbread shop is in the village's old school building, where Wordsworth once taught. The recipe has been secret since 1854.
Wordsworth lived at Dove Cottage from 1799 to 1808 and wrote most of his best work there. It is small, dark and startlingly modest for a man of his later reputation, and the museum alongside holds manuscripts worth a slow hour. The circuit from Grasmere round to Rydal Water and back is about four miles with no serious climbing — two lakes, a cave, and Wordsworth's later home at Rydal on the way. It is the finest low-level walk in the central Lakes and it starts from the village. Do it in the early evening in summer and long stretches will be yours alone.
Ambleside library is your nearest pickup, about ten minutes down the valley — our other two are Windermere station and Bowness Pier 1. Private days collect at the hotel.
