April: the Marmalade Awards

Every April, Dalemain hosts the World's Original Marmalade Awards and Festival — a genuinely eccentric, much-loved event that fills the house with entered jars from around the world, alongside talks, tastings and the announcement of that year's winners. It began in 2005 and now raises significant funds for hospice care in Cumbria, with sister festivals in Australia and Japan. If you have any interest in food, competition, or simply unusual British institutions, it's worth building a visit around.

The Rose Walk and herbaceous borders peak through summer, with an August classic car show adding another reason to visit later in the season.
