There are a few places in England where the landscape produces genuine surprise — where you know intellectually what you are about to see but the reality, when you arrive, is larger and stranger than you expected. Malham Cove is one of them.
The cove is a curved limestone cliff 260 metres wide and 80 metres high, formed by a waterfall that disappeared underground approximately 12,000 years ago as the climate changed at the end of the last ice age. The scale of the thing — the sheer vertical face, the curve of the cliff enclosing the valley head like a theatre curtain — produces a silence in most visitors that lasts for a moment before the questions begin.
Malham Cove sits on the Mid Craven Fault — one of the most significant geological boundaries in the Yorkshire Dales, where the limestone has been displaced vertically by hundreds of metres of movement over millions of years. The cliff face exposes the Great Scar Limestone — grey, massively bedded, visibly layered — in a section that would take a geologist weeks to fully document.
Above the cliff, accessible by steps cut into the eastern side, is one of the finest limestone pavements in England. The pavement — flat expanses of bare limestone fractured by water into the characteristic clints (flat blocks) and grykes (the fissures between them) — covers several acres above the cliff top. The grykes are deep enough to support shade-loving plants that cannot survive the exposure of the open pavement surface: hart's tongue fern, herb robert, dog's mercury and, in sheltered deeper grykes, wood sorrel and wood anemone.
During the last glacial maximum (approximately 20,000 years ago), a glacier filled the valley above Malham and its meltwater drained south over the limestone plateau. As the climate warmed and the glacier retreated, the drainage pattern changed: the water found its way through the limestone rather than over it, disappearing underground through the joints and bedding planes that characterise this rock. The waterfall that had carved the cliff face dried up. The cliff remained.
The water that now emerges at Aire Head springs, 800 metres south of Malham village, was demonstrated by dye-tracing experiments in the 1970s to come not from the tarn above the cove but from Smelt Mill Sink, a swallow hole on the moorland to the north-west. The hydrology of the Malham area remains one of the most actively studied in British karst science.
Malham Cove appeared as a filming location in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (2010), where it stood in for the mountainous landscape Harry and Hermione camp in while searching for Horcruxes. The limestone pavement above the cliff is the specific location used. This has significantly increased visitor numbers to Malham in the years since the film's release.
The walk from Malham village to the cove is approximately 1.5 miles return on a good path. The National Park manages the path carefully given the very high visitor numbers, and it is generally in good condition. Steps to the top of the cliff are maintained but steep.
Malham village itself has a National Park Centre, a pub, cafés and limited parking. The car park fills on summer weekends; arriving before 9am or after 4pm significantly improves the experience.
Gordale Scar — one mile east of Malham, an even more dramatic limestone gorge than the cove. Most visitors do both in a single day.
Malham Tarn — a natural lake above the cove, one of only a handful of natural lakes on limestone in Britain (limestone is usually so porous that surface water drains away). The tarn sits above an impermeable band of Silurian rock.
