Dalemain sits close enough to Ullswater to combine naturally with a day exploring the lake, while being far enough off the main tourist routes to feel unhurried even in high season.
The house is around five miles southwest of Penrith, on the A592 road towards Ullswater — about two miles from Pooley Bridge and three miles from Junction 40 of the M6. Penrith station, roughly three miles away, has direct trains from London, Edinburgh and Glasgow, making Dalemain one of the more straightforward historic houses to reach without a car.
Alongside the house and gardens, there's a tearoom, gift shop, and several circular walks from the grounds — flat, traffic-free routes of two to three miles, well suited to a gentle walk either side of the house tour. Deer are often visible in the surrounding parkland.
Check Dalemain's own website for current opening hours and admission, as these change seasonally — the mansion typically closes over the deepest part of winter while the gardens and tearoom remain open on reduced hours.
Dalemain can be included in a bespoke history and gardens tour near Ullswater.
