Hutton in the Forest is, by most accounts, the least famous of the five gardens covered in this series — and for visitors who've already done the better-known houses, that's often exactly the appeal.
The house stands near the village of Skelton, close to Penrith, in the historic county of Cumberland — on the edge of what was once the medieval Royal Forest of Inglewood, from which the house takes its name.
Because Hutton draws fewer visitors than Dalemain or Holker on a typical summer day, it tends to feel unhurried even in season — a genuine point in its favour for anyone who finds the more popular houses crowded. The grounds, gardens and woodland walk are generally open daily except Saturdays; check Hutton's own website for current hours and admission before visiting, as these are set independently of anything on this site.
