We get a lot of questions before people book our Beatrix Potter tours. Some are practical; some are about what we cover and how; some are about whether the visit will be as good as they are hoping. This guide answers the questions we hear most often.
The Hidden Country morning tour (9am–1pm) focuses on the land Beatrix Potter farmed: Hill Top, Near Sawrey, the surrounding Herdwick country and the conservation story. This is the farm, the garden, the landscape she bought and the animals she bred. It is the tour that goes deepest into what Potter actually did with her money and her later life.
The Hill Top & Windermere Cruise afternoon tour (2pm–approx. 6pm) focuses on the literary and publishing story: Wray Castle (where her Lake District story began in 1882), Windermere and the lake landscape of the illustrations, and Tabitha Twitchit's Bookshop in Hawkshead with its collection of original illustrations. This is the tour of the books — the settings, the publishing history and the original artwork.
Both tours tell the full story, but from different starting points. Because they overlap at Wray Castle and Hill Top, most guests choose one rather than both, pairing it instead with our 8 Lakes tour or a Wordsworth tour. If you can only do one, the Hidden Country tour is the one most people find most affecting, because Hill Top is the centrepiece and it is genuinely extraordinary.
Yes. Entry to all National Trust sites on both tours is included in the tour price. You do not need a National Trust membership card for our tours, though if you are a member it is worth bringing it as a gesture of support.
No. We manage the National Trust entry bookings as part of your tour booking. You do not need to arrange this separately.
Yes. Children are welcome on both tours and we actively encourage family bookings. For children who know the books, the visit to Hill Top — recognising the places from the illustrations — is one of the finest experiences available in the Lake District. Neither tour involves significant walking. The distances on foot at each stop are short — from the vehicle to the location, around the garden or site, back to the vehicle. Comfortable shoes are adequate; fell boots are not required. If you have specific mobility requirements, please tell us when booking and we will explain exactly what each stop involves.
Both tours include: expert storyteller throughout, comfortable minibus with WiFi and USB charging, pickup from Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside and Oxenholme, and entry to Hill Top and all National Trust sites visited.
Not included: food and drink.
You can, but both tours visit Wray Castle and Hill Top, so combining them means covering the same ground twice. Most guests instead pair one Beatrix Potter tour with our 8 Lakes tour for varied scenery, or a Wordsworth tour to keep the day literary. If you would still like to do both Beatrix Potter tours, you would need to arrange your own lunch between 1pm and 2pm in Bowness or Ambleside — both are five minutes from the return point of the morning tour and the departure point of the afternoon tour.

Yes. Any of our tours can be booked as a private hire for your group alone. A private Beatrix Potter tour for a family — parents and children, or multiple generations — means the pace, the conversation and the content are entirely calibrated to your family rather than to a mixed group. Several families book the combined morning and afternoon as a private full-day experience.

The Peter Rabbit story — the 1893 letter, the private printing, the Warne publication, the book's success and what Potter did with the money — is woven throughout both tours. The specific location of the Peter Rabbit garden (the Hill Top vegetable garden) is visited on the Hidden Country tour. On the Hill Top & Windermere Cruise tour, the Wray Castle and Windermere section covers the Lake District summers that formed the visual basis for the illustrations.
For families specifically, Tim brings the relevant illustrated pages to each location and makes the comparison between the illustration and the real place. This is consistently the moment that children most specifically remember.
It rains in the Lake District. We run in all weathers and the tours are fully operational in rain. Hill Top and the bookshop are covered; the garden and outdoor sections are not. A waterproof jacket is on the recommended packing list for all our tours.
The Lake District in rain has its own quality, and Beatrix Potter — who painted in the Lake District in all weathers — would recognise it.
