You send us an email describing something you are curious about. A landscape, a writer, a piece of history, a family connection. A few weeks later, you spend a day exploring it in depth with a guide who has prepared specifically for you.
In between those two things, quite a lot happens. This is what.
A bespoke tour begins with a conversation — usually by email, sometimes by phone. We want to understand what you are interested in, what you already know, what you want to come away with. This is not a form to fill in; it is a genuine discussion about what would make the day exceptional for you specifically.
The questions we typically ask: What is the subject or theme you want to explore? Have you been to the Lake District before? Are there specific places you want to visit? Are there physical limitations we should know about? Is there a particular depth of treatment you want — an introduction to a subject, or a serious exploration of it?
Once we understand what you want, we match the enquiry to the expert storyteller best placed to deliver it. Our four guides have different backgrounds and specialisms. A day focused on Victorian industrial heritage goes to a different guide than a day focused on Wordsworth's poetry, or a day focused on the geology of the central fells.
In some cases, the subject requires preparation beyond any guide's existing knowledge — specific archive research, a visit to a site not normally on any tour, consultation with a specialist. We make this explicit when it applies and factor it into the planning deposit.
We propose an itinerary based on the conversation. This is not a fixed document — it is a starting point for discussion. The guest reads it and responds with adjustments: more time here, this particular place added, this section shortened. We iterate until the itinerary reflects what the day should actually be.
For most bespoke tours, this process takes two to four exchanges. For more complex requests — a family history day involving archive research, for example — it may take longer.
A planning deposit of £50 is taken on confirmation of the booking. This is refunded in full against the final tour payment. It exists to cover the time and preparation required before the day — the itinerary development, the expert storyteller preparation, any advance bookings for entry to sites. If the tour is cancelled, the deposit is non-refundable.
By the time the day arrives, the expert storyteller has prepared specifically for your group. The conversation in the vehicle is not the standard tour narrative — it is a discussion directed at what you came for. The stops are the stops that serve your subject. The depth at each stop is calibrated to your level of interest and knowledge.
