The setting does a great deal of the work here, and deservedly. Whinlatter is the only true mountain forest in England, and the house sits high in it with forest on one side and open fell views on the other. The kitchen holds one Michelin Star and has done since 2019, built on local sourcing in a place where local means the valley below.
It is a restaurant with rooms rather than a hotel, which suits the scale of it.
Whinlatter is a pass, and passes are dark. From Windermere allow the better part of an hour up the A591 through Grasmere and Thirlmere to Keswick, then the climb up Whinlatter itself. The road is good but it is unlit, wooded and steep, and coming back down it late on a wet November evening is not the same road you drove up in daylight.
On the other hand, on a clear night this is one of the darkest skies in England. If the forecast is good, that alone is an argument for staying.
A northern Lakes day. Our full-day tour reaches Keswick and Castlerigg Stone Circle, which puts you in the right half of the National Park — though it returns south to Windermere at six, which then means the drive north again.
The cleaner answer is a private full day that finishes in the north. Note the standing rule: Keswick and the further-out valleys are full-day private only, unless you are booking two half-day privates on the same date.
The rooms exist for a reason. Taxis from Keswick up Whinlatter are possible and need booking well ahead; nothing passes on spec at that altitude. If anyone is drinking, stay.

If anyone has been drinking, no. The pass is unlit, wooded and steep, and taxis at that altitude need booking well in advance. The restaurant has rooms.
