Grange-over-Sands is a Victorian seaside town on the northern edge of Morecambe Bay, just outside the national park — ornamental gardens, a mile-long promenade, a mild microclimate that lets palms and camellias grow, and a slightly faded elegance that is a good deal of its charm. It is quiet, cheap by Lakeland standards, and on the main railway line.
Grange grew as a resort when the railway arrived across the bay in 1857, and for decades it had bathing and boats. Then the channels of the Kent shifted, saltmarsh crept in, and the water withdrew — so the promenade now looks out over grass and sand rather than sea for most of the tide. It ought to be sad and somehow is not: the walk is lovely, the gardens are well kept, and the light over the bay is extraordinary.
The mild bay climate is real, incidentally. Palms, camellias and magnolias all do well here in a way they emphatically do not twenty miles north.
This needs saying plainly. Morecambe Bay's sands are really dangerous — fast tides, shifting channels and quicksand — and people have died. There is a Queen's Guide to the Sands, an office that has existed since the sixteenth century, and organised cross-bay walks are led by the holder of that post. Do not attempt to walk out onto the sands independently. Go on a guided crossing or admire them from the promenade.
The limestone fell behind the town is a short, easy climb to a small stone tower called the Hospice, built in the 1840s by a local vicar for the shelter and improvement of travellers. On a clear day you can see the whole bay, the Lakeland fells to the north and, occasionally, Blackpool Tower. It takes about an hour and is one of the best-value views in the south.
Cartmel, ten minutes north, has the twelfth-century priory, the racecourse and the food. Holker Hall nearby has award-winning gardens and a very fine Victorian interior — and we run tours there. Both make easy half-days from a Grange base.
