The Newby Bridge Hotel looks down over the southern tip of Windermere, and its real advantage is what sits within walking distance: the cruise pier, the steam railway, the aquarium and the motor museum are all clustered here. For families in particular, that is a stronger hand than most Lakeland hotels can play.

This is the practical case for the southern end. The Lakes Aquarium is genuinely good on freshwater habitats — otters, divers, and the fish of Windermere itself. The Lakeland Motor Museum up the road holds a serious collection including a Campbell Bluebird exhibition. Add the steam railway and the boats, and you have four indoor-or-sheltered options within a mile of the door, which in Cumbria is worth planning around.

Drive up the hill to the car park and walk twenty minutes to the summit. The whole length of Windermere opens up below with the Coniston and Langdale fells behind it — a genuinely great Lakeland view for about as little effort as the district allows. Take it on a clear evening.
Cartmel, a short drive south, has a twelfth-century priory that survived the Dissolution because half of it was the parish church, a National Hunt racecourse in the middle of the village, and a small shop that made sticky toffee pudding famous. Holker Hall nearby has award-winning gardens and one of the finest Victorian interiors in the north — and we run tours there.
Our scheduled tours depart Windermere station, Bowness Pier 1 and Ambleside library — around half an hour north up the lake road. Oxenholme, for our full-day tours, is a similar run east. Private days collect at the door.
The grand sweep: ten lakes, the high passes between them, and an Ullswater Steamers cruise exclusive to this tour. If a celebration stay deserves one great day out, this is it.
