The Swan sits beside the River Leven at Newby Bridge, right where Windermere drains south towards Morecambe Bay. It is a former coaching inn on what was the main road into the Lakes, and the position is a good one: the lake a few minutes north, the steam railway alongside, and Cartmel and Holker a short drive south.

Newby Bridge takes its name from the low stone bridge over the Leven, which despite the name is old — a five-arched crossing that has carried the road south out of the Lakes for centuries. The Swan grew up beside it as a coaching inn on that route. Standing on the bridge watching the Leven run is a small and genuinely pleasant thing to do before dinner.
The river is the only outflow from Windermere, which means everything that falls on the central fells eventually comes past here.
Within a couple of miles: the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway running steam up the Leven valley, the Lakes Aquarium at the lake head, the Lakeland Motor Museum, and Fell Foot, the National Trust park with lawns to the water and boat hire. It is the best concentration of family-friendly and wet-weather options in the national park.
Cartmel is a short drive: a twelfth-century priory that survived the Dissolution because part of it served as the parish church, a racecourse in the middle of the village, and a food reputation out of all proportion to its size. Holker Hall, close by, has award-winning gardens, a great Victorian interior and one of the largest lime trees in the country — and we run tours there.
Our scheduled tours depart Windermere station, Bowness Pier 1 and Ambleside library — around half an hour north up the lake road. Oxenholme, for our full-day tours, is a similar run east. Private days collect at the door.
