The Ullswater Steamers at dusk — the evening sailings in summer, with the light going off the western fells and the lake going dark, are one of the most beautiful things the Lake District offers. The steamers run year-round; the evening sailing in late September or October, with the autumn colours on the shore, is as good as it gets.

Hill Top, Near Sawrey — Beatrix Potter's farmhouse is best visited not in the height of summer but in October or early November, when the queues are shorter and the surrounding woodland is in colour. Two hours here, walking the lanes, seeing the farm and the landscape she painted, is one of the most quietly satisfying experiences in the southern Lakes.
Rydal Water at dawn — the path from Rydal village along the northern shore of Rydal Water, before the tourists arrive, in the early light of a clear morning, is one of the finest short walks in the Lake District. Allow an hour and a half; bring a flask.
For a romantic Lakes visit, the accommodation matters. The most memorable stays in the Lake District are typically not in the large hotels on the Bowness waterfront but in smaller properties — country house hotels with lake views, farmhouse B&Bs with good breakfasts and genuine character, or well-chosen self-catering cottages in the quieter valleys.
The Langdale Estate, the Borrowdale Hotel, the Daffodil Hotel on the shores of Grasmere, and Linthwaite House above Windermere are among the most consistent choices for couples who want comfort without impersonality. In the Dales, the Devonshire Arms at Bolton Abbey is exceptional.
The Lake District has been a proposal destination for as long as people have been coming here, which means the classic viewpoints — the summit of a fell, the shore of Ullswater at sunset — have been used before. The more original choices tend to be quieter: the top of Surprise View at the moment the lake appears below, Dora's Field in the daffodil season, the Grot at Rydal Hall in the afternoon light.
