How Much Does a Private Lake District Tour Cost — And When Is It Actually Worth It?

The short answer: our private tours start at £459 per group — that is the total price for the whole vehicle, up to seven guests, not per person. A private version of a scheduled half-day tour runs from £467, full days from £915, and our five dedicated historic house tours are £459 each. Every private tour comes with free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure. That is the whole pricing model; there are no supplements hiding further down this page.

What follows is the part most tour companies would rather not write: the actual per-person arithmetic, the point at which a private tour becomes cheaper than booking seats on a scheduled one, and — just as honestly — the situations where private is the wrong choice and a scheduled seat serves you better.

One price for the vehicle, however many of you there are

Private tour pricing confuses people because it inverts the usual logic. A scheduled tour is priced per seat: the 8 Lakes Tour is £79 per person, whether you book one seat or six. A private tour is priced per group: the vehicle, the guide and the day are yours exclusively, and the price is the same whether two of you climb aboard or seven.

That single fact drives everything else in this guide. It means a private tour for a couple is a genuine premium — you are paying for the whole vehicle and using two seats. And it means a private tour for a full group of six or seven can, on several of our routes, work out cheaper per head than the scheduled equivalent. People are routinely surprised by that. The arithmetic is below.

The actual prices

Every scheduled tour we run is available privately. The current private prices, per group:

Alongside these sit five dedicated private tours of Cumbria's historic houses — Levens Hall, Sizergh Castle, Holker Hall, Dalemain and Hutton in the Forest — each at £459 per group. These have no scheduled equivalent; they only run privately.

Included admissions stay included. A private Beatrix Potter tour still includes Hill Top entry; the private 10 Lakes Full-day Tour still includes the Ullswater cruise; the private Brontë day still includes the Parsonage. You are not paying for the shell of a tour and buying the contents separately.

The per-person maths — where it gets interesting

Divide the group price by the number of guests and the picture changes shape entirely depending on how many of you there are.

A couple. A private 8 Lakes Tour at £799 is roughly £400 each, against £79 each on the scheduled departure. That is a five-fold premium, and we will not pretend otherwise. What you are buying is not transport — it is the guide's whole attention, a pace set entirely by you, and a day with nobody else in it. For an anniversary or a proposal, that is usually exactly the point. For a Tuesday, the scheduled tour is terrific and we would honestly steer you there.

A family or group of four. The private Beatrix Potter morning at £467 works out at about £117 each, against £79 scheduled — a premium of under £40 a head to have the day built around your children, your pace and your questions. This is where most of our private bookings sit, and where the value case starts to feel obvious.

Six or seven of you. Now the arithmetic flips. Seven seats on the scheduled The 10 Lakes Full-day Tour cost £169 × 7 = £1,183. The same tour, private, is £915 — about £131 each. The private tour is cheaper, and you have the vehicle to yourselves. The same is true of the Beatrix Potter tours from six guests, and of the All Creatures and Brontë full days at or near full occupancy. The only route where private never undercuts scheduled is the 8 Lakes Tour, whose scheduled price is so low that seven seats still total £553 against £799 private.

What the premium actually buys

Where private does cost more, this is what the difference consists of. The pace is yours — linger at Castlerigg for forty minutes if the light is doing something worth watching, skip the shop stop nobody wants. The guide's attention is undivided: every question gets a full answer, and the next one, and the one after that. The guide knows the occasion before you arrive — a birthday, an anniversary, a retirement — and shapes the day around it. And the route can flex in ways a scheduled departure cannot, within the limits of pre-booked admissions and fixed boat times.

What it does not buy is a different standard of guiding. The scheduled tours use the same guides, the same vehicles and the same routes. If your budget says scheduled, you are not getting a lesser day — you are getting the same day, shared with at most six other people.

Bespoke is a different thing — and priced differently

A private tour is one of our existing tours run exclusively for you. A bespoke tour is a day designed from scratch around your subject — your interests, your depth, your pace. Bespoke days are typically priced from £459 for a half day to £942 for a full day with two guides, and more complex requests may be higher; we always explain how we have arrived at a price. Enquiries that need significant research carry a refundable £50 planning deposit, credited in full against the tour when you book. Bespoke terms are confirmed at enquiry.

Cancellation, deposits and the small print

Private tours share the same cancellation policy as our scheduled tours: free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour. There is no premium-product penalty clause. For bespoke tours, terms are confirmed when you enquire. If we ever have to cancel — a guide emergency, genuinely extreme weather — you get a full refund or a transfer to another date, your choice.

So — when is private worth it?

Book private when the occasion matters more than the arithmetic, when your group has its own centre of gravity — children, grandparents, a guest of honour — or when there are six or seven of you and it is simply the better deal. Book scheduled when you are one, two or three people wanting a superb day at the best price, and when meeting a few like-minded strangers is part of the pleasure rather than an intrusion. Both are the same tours, told by the same storytellers. If you are genuinely unsure, ask us and we will tell you straight — including when the answer is "save your money and book the scheduled one."
