Ryan Blackburn's restaurant sits below street level in Ambleside, and the tasting menu is called A Journey Around Cumbria — which is a fair description of the cooking. Herdwick, fell-bred meat, Morecambe Bay shellfish, foraged things from a few miles away. It has held its star for several consecutive years, which in this county is harder than it sounds.
The building matters too. Wordsworth held the distributorship of stamps for Westmorland from 1813 until 1842 — a government revenue post, unglamorous and necessary, and the thing that actually paid the household bills at Rydal Mount. Guests on our Wordsworth tours hear about it. Very few visitors realise they can have dinner in it.
There isn't one, and that is the point. Old Stamp House is in the middle of Ambleside, a short walk from the library where our tours pick up and drop off. From Windermere or Bowness it is about a quarter of an hour by road, and the 555 bus runs the same corridor.
Ambleside parking is the only real friction — the central car parks fill early in season and the evening turnover is slow. If you are driving in for dinner, come earlier than you need to and spend the extra half hour in the town rather than circling it.
Almost anything. This is the most tour-compatible starred restaurant in the county. A full-day tour returns at six; you are five minutes from the table. An afternoon tour finishing at six works the same way. A morning tour leaves you an entire afternoon in Ambleside beforehand.
The pairing we would actually recommend is the Wordsworth Morning Tour and dinner here the same evening — Dove Cottage, Rydal, the places he wrote about, and then supper underneath the office he went to on weekday mornings for twenty-nine years. It closes a loop that most visitors never even see is open.
If you are staying in Ambleside, walk. If you are in Windermere or Bowness, a pre-booked taxi is straightforward on this corridor, and considerably easier than anywhere further out. This is one of the few starred restaurants in Cumbria where getting home is genuinely not a problem.
