An eight-course tasting menu built on Cumbrian suppliers and home-grown produce from a walled garden at Netherby Hall. The setting is border country — the debatable lands, as they were once known, fought over for centuries and now among the emptiest and quietest countryside in England.
It is a genuinely lovely place. It is not a Lake District restaurant, and anyone telling you otherwise is being loose with the map.
An hour and forty minutes from Windermere on a good day, most of it motorway. That is not a detour; that is a separate expedition. Coming back the same night after a tasting menu means someone is driving the M6 in the dark for the better part of two hours.
If Pentonbridge is on your list, treat it as an overnight — ideally as part of a trip that is also taking in Hadrian's Wall or the Scottish Borders, where the geography makes sense.
Honestly: not one of our Lake District tours, on the same day. There is no combination of a central Lakes tour and a Penton dinner that we would recommend, and we would rather say so than sell you one.
