This is a private afternoon guided tour of Sizergh Castle — exclusively for your group of up to seven guests — departing at 1:30pm. You visit the castle, home of the Strickland family since 1239, with its Elizabethan interiors, with house entry included and the expert storyteller’s full attention on your group alone. £459 per group, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour.

The afternoon Sizergh tour follows the same programme as the morning session — the peel tower, the Elizabethan interiors, the Inlaid Chamber, the rock garden and the full Strickland family story. The tour departs at 1:30pm and returns to Windermere by approximately 5:00pm.

The afternoon light on the castle's stone and the garden's rockwork is particularly fine in summer and autumn — the western aspect of the building catches the low sun from early afternoon onwards.

What you will see

The Strickland Family Story

Catholic recusancy, Jacobite exile, parliamentary disadvantage and eight centuries of continuous occupation — a family history that reads against the grain of English mainstream history in ways that are consistently illuminating.

The Elizabethan Interiors

The Inlaid Chamber, the Great Hall and the sequence of family rooms — the finest surviving Elizabethan carved interiors in the north of England, in the house where they were made.

Frequently asked questions

Which station should we arrive at?
Windermere station is the most convenient for guests staying in the southern Lakes — it is in the town and we pick up directly outside. Oxenholme Lake District station is on the West Coast Main Line and is better for guests arriving on fast services from London, Manchester, Edinburgh or Glasgow. Both work equally well; tell us your preferred station when enquiring. See our Windermere or Oxenholme arrival guides for full detail.
How many guests can join a private tour?
Up to seven guests. The price is per group, not per person, so the more guests in your party the better the value per head.
Can we adapt the itinerary?
Yes. All private tours are flexible — if you want to spend longer somewhere, skip a stop, or add something specific, tell us when enquiring and we will build the day around your preferences.
Is entry to the properties included?
Entry to the houses and gardens visited is included in the tour price. No additional payments are needed at the gate.
Can we visit both Sizergh and Levens Hall on the same day?
Yes — a combined full-day private tour taking in both properties is possible. Please enquire for a bespoke itinerary and pricing.
