Holker Hall is on the Cartmel Peninsula — the finger of Cumbria that extends south between Morecambe Bay and the Leven estuary, separated from the main Lake District fells by a few miles of limestone country. It has been the seat of the Cavendish family since the 18th century, and the house that stands today is largely Victorian — the original western wing burned down in 1871 and was rebuilt in the 1870s to a design that is confident rather than apologetic about being new.
The garden is exceptional. The cascade waterfall, the woodland garden, the formal parterre and the kitchen garden together make up one of the finest private gardens in the north of England — and unlike many great houses, Holker's garden is still actively developed, with new plantings and commissions that sit alongside the Victorian and Edwardian bones.
The water cascade at Holker — a formal series of falls descending through woodland planting — is one of the garden's defining features. The surrounding woodland garden has significant rhododendron and azalea collections, at their peak in May and June.
Rebuilt after the 1871 fire, the house is an assured piece of high Victorian domestic architecture — the interiors include a library of particular quality and a sequence of reception rooms that retain the character of a lived-in family home rather than a museum.
Holker has strong food connections — the Holker Food Hall is on the estate and the kitchen garden supplies it. The food hall and estate shop are available to visit independently after the guided tour.
