The Netherwood is a Grade II listed Victorian mansion standing in around fifteen acres of woodland and landscaped garden on the road into Grange, looking out over Morecambe Bay. It is the largest and best-known hotel in the town, with a spa and pool, and it is within walking distance of both the promenade and the railway station.

The house was built as a private mansion in the Victorian era and the scale shows it — oak, high ceilings, and grounds that run to about fifteen acres of woodland and garden above the bay. Behind the hotel the limestone woodland continues into Eggerslack Wood and the Brown Robin nature reserve, which makes for an easy hour's walking straight from the door without touching a road.
The kitchen leans on what the area actually produces — saltmarsh lamb off the bay, Morecambe Bay seafood, game from the Cartmel valley.
This needs saying plainly on every Grange page. Morecambe Bay's sands are genuinely dangerous — fast tides, shifting channels and quicksand — and people have died out there. There has been an official Queen's Guide to the Sands since the sixteenth century, and organised cross-bay walks are led by the holder of that post. Do not walk out onto the sands independently. Go on a guided crossing, or enjoy them from the promenade.
From the shore they are extraordinary — a vast shifting plain of light and water that changes completely with the tide.
The limestone fell behind the town is a short climb to a small stone tower called the Hospice, built in the 1840s by a local vicar for the shelter and improvement of travellers. From the roof you can see the whole bay, the Lakeland fells north — the Old Man of Coniston, Helvellyn, the Langdales — and on a clear day rather further. It takes about forty minutes up and is the best-value view in the south of the county.
Cartmel, about ten minutes north, is a village of a few hundred people holding a twelfth-century priory that argued its way out of the Dissolution, a National Hunt racecourse in the fields, and — since 2022 — three Michelin stars at L'Enclume, with a fourth at Rogan & Co. Holker Hall nearby has award-winning gardens, a very fine Victorian interior and one of the largest lime trees in Britain, and we run tours there.
Our scheduled tours depart Windermere station, Bowness Pier 1 and Ambleside library — around forty to forty-five minutes north. From Grange a private day collected at the door is usually the easier arrangement, and Grange has its own station on the Furness line if you would rather arrive by train.
The grand sweep: ten lakes, the high passes between them, and an Ullswater Steamers cruise exclusive to this tour. If a celebration stay deserves one great day out, this is it.
