Two Keys is Michelin's second-highest hotel distinction, and The Samling has it at around a dozen rooms — no spa the size of a leisure centre, no wing of suites, just a house on a hillside doing everything precisely. The restaurant holds a Michelin Star in its own right, awarded independently of the Key.
The view down over Windermere is genuinely part of the experience, which has a practical consequence: a table in the last of the daylight is a different meal from a table at nine in November. Worth thinking about when you book the time.
The Samling sits above the road between Windermere and Ambleside, up a steep private drive. About ten minutes from either. It is close to everything and still feels genuinely tucked away, which is the trick of the location.
The drive itself is narrow and steep. In hard winter weather that is worth a thought, and it is one more reason not to be driving yourself after a long dinner.
Anything. Being between two of our three pickup points is close to ideal — a full-day tour returning at six to either Windermere or Ambleside puts you ten minutes from the house.

If you are staying, you are already there. If you are coming for the table, book the return in advance — the private drive is not somewhere a taxi will be passing.
