Staying and Dining: Keys and Stars Under One Roof

The neatest solution to every timing problem in this collection is to sleep where you eat. Four hotels in Cumbria hold both a Michelin Key and a Michelin-starred restaurant, which means no drive, no taxi, and no one nominated to stay sober. Here is how they differ, and how to sequence a trip built around them.

Gilpin Hotel & Lake House — two Keys, one Star

Bowness-on-Windermere, at Crook. Two Keys puts it in rare company outside London. SOURCE holds the star; Gilpin Spice offers a considerably more relaxed alternative on the same estate, which matters on a multi-night stay. The Samling — two Keys, one Star

Above Windermere, listed by Michelin under Ambleside. Around twelve rooms, which is what makes two Keys at this scale notable. Between two of our three pickup points, so a full day out and an evening table sit together easily. Dining day guide.

Forest Side — one Key, one Star, one Green Star

Farlam Hall — one Key, one Star

Near Brampton, up towards Hadrian's Wall — an hour and a half from Windermere and not part of a Lakes itinerary. Excellent as a second leg if the Roman Wall is also on your list. Dining day guide.

Linthwaite House — one Key, no Star

Bowness-on-Windermere, an Edwardian manor on around fourteen acres above the lake. It holds a Michelin Key; its restaurant Henrock is part of the Simon Rogan group but does not itself hold a Michelin Star. Worth stating plainly, because a great many articles get this one wrong. Sequencing a trip around the food

Three or four nights is the honest minimum for more than one starred meal, and the sequencing matters more than the individual bookings. The pattern that works: base in the central Lakes, put the big tour days early while the weather is still an unknown quantity, and place the Cartmel evening on a day with a morning tour rather than a full one.

If the far-north restaurants are on the list — Pentonbridge Inn, Cedar Tree at Farlam Hall — treat them as a separate leg with their own night rather than a day trip. An hour and a half each way after a tasting menu is not a holiday.
