This is a private afternoon guided tour of Holker Hall — exclusively for your group of up to seven guests — departing at 1:30pm. You visit the hall and its exceptional gardens on the Cartmel Peninsula, with house entry included and the expert storyteller’s full attention on your group alone. £459 per group, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before the tour.

The afternoon Holker tour follows the same programme as the morning — the cascade garden, the woodland planting, the Victorian house and the full Cavendish family story. The tour departs at 1:30pm and returns to Windermere by approximately 5:00pm.

The afternoon light in the woodland garden and on the cascade is particularly fine from late summer onwards, when the lower sun angle catches the falling water and the shadows of the mature trees lengthen across the formal areas.

What you will see

The Cascade in Afternoon Light

The water cascade at Holker takes on a different quality in afternoon light — the sun moving round to illuminate the falls from a lower angle, the woodland shadows shifting. From July onwards this is often the better light for the garden's water features.

The Victorian Interiors

The library, the drawing rooms and the sequence of family rooms — comfortable, personal and very much a family home rather than a show house.

Frequently asked questions

Which station should we arrive at?
Windermere station is the most convenient for guests staying in the southern Lakes — it is in the town and we pick up directly outside. Oxenholme Lake District station is on the West Coast Main Line and is better for guests arriving on fast services from London, Manchester, Edinburgh or Glasgow. Both work equally well; tell us your preferred station when enquiring. See our Windermere or Oxenholme arrival guides for full detail.
How many guests can join a private tour?
Up to seven guests. The price is per group, not per person, so the more guests in your party the better the value per head.
Can we adapt the itinerary?
Yes. All private tours are flexible — if you want to spend longer somewhere, skip a stop, or add something specific, tell us when enquiring and we will build the day around your preferences.
Is entry to the properties included?
Entry to the houses and gardens visited is included in the tour price. No additional payments are needed at the gate.
Can we visit the Holker Food Hall?
Yes — the food hall and estate shop are adjacent to the house and available to visit independently. We typically allow time for this at the end of the tour.
