Surprise View, above Derwentwater

Start with the one whose name does half the work. A short step from the road above Ashness Bridge, the ground falls away and the whole of Derwentwater is suddenly below you, with Keswick, Bassenthwaite and the north-western fells beyond. It is one of the most photographed views in the National Park for good reason, and early on a private morning tour you can have it nearly to yourselves.

Castlerigg Stone Circle

Five thousand years old, ringed by mountains on every side, and quietly magnificent in a way that makes people lower their voices. A proposal at Castlerigg attaches your story to a place that has mattered to humans since before writing existed. It is at its best early or late, when the coaches are elsewhere.

Tarn Hows

Kirkstone Pass

A garden, if the fells aren't your style

The practical details nobody tells you

The ring. Keep it on your person, not in a bag, and tell your guide it exists. Guides are extremely good at engineering a moment where your partner is looking at the view and you are not.

The photograph. Decide in advance whether you want the moment photographed. Your guide will happily take photos of the two of you on your phone in the minutes after — the champagne-cheeked, just-said-yes photos are usually the best ones anyway.
